The state House has been asked to consider a proposed amendment to the school code that would further protect students from being subjected to corporal punishment.
House Bill (HB) 5639 especially targets punishment in the forms of restraints and seclusion of students, where physical as well as emotional trauma can take place.
State Rep. Eileen Kowall (R-White Lake, Highland) is a co-sponsor of the bill. She said its purpose is focused on "instances where kids have been locked in closets, or restrained where they have been hurt, or restrained on the floor where they couldn't breathe."
